TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
Certified by the State of Alabama in the appropriate area, subject, and/or grade level assigned.
Meet highly qualified requirements for grade level, subject(s) assigned.
Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
2002-457.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt SUPERVISED BY: Principal REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned.
Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum.
Knowledge of current educational research.
Ability to use technology for communication, instruction, clerical tasks, data analysis, record keeping, research, and reporting related to performance responsibilities.
Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles.
Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents and others.
Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness.
Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement.
Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn.
Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators, parents and the public.
JOB GOAL: To provide an educational environment in which students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth and maturation in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Creates or selects long-range plans based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities, student profiles and instructional priorities.
Defines goals and objectives for long range instructional, departmental, grade level and daily lesson plans.
Sequences content and activities appropriately.
Identifies specific intended learning outcomes which are challenging, meaningful and measurable Revises plans based on student needs.
Plans and prepares a variety of learning activities considering individual student’s culture, learning styles, special needs and socio-economic background.
Develops or selects instructional activities which foster active involvement of students in the learning process.
Plans and prepares lessons and instructional strategies which support the school improvement plan and the system mission.
Selects, develops, modifies and/or adapts materials and resources which support learning objectives and address students’ varying learning styles, backgrounds and special needs.
Establishes and maintains a positive and safe learning environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process.
Maintains a clean, attractive and organized learning environment.
Maintains academic focus by using a variety of motivational techniques.
Establishes and uses behavior management techniques which are appropriate and effective.
Establishes routines and procedures and works with students on consistently following them.
Creates a learning climate that is challenging yet non-threatening.
Maintains instructional momentum with smooth and efficient transitions from one activity to another.
Establishes appropriate testing environment and ensures test security.
Establishes and maintains efficient record keeping procedures.
Organizes procedures, practices, materials, and routines for the effective use of instructional time and for the completion of administration activities.
Instructs and supervises the work of student interns, volunteers and paraprofessionals when assigned.
Enforces of school rules, administrative regulations and Board policy.
Develops and uses assessment strategies (traditional and alternative) to assist the continuous development of learners.
Interprets and uses data (including but not limited to standardized and other test results) for diagnosis, instructional planning and program evaluation.
Uses ongoing assessment to monitor student progress, to verify that learning is occurring and to adjust curriculum and instruction.
Provides feedback to students about the appropriateness of responses and quality of work with a focus on improving student performance.
Communicates, in understandable terms, individual student progress knowledgeably and responsibly to the student, parents and professional colleagues who need access to the information.
Encourages self-assessment by students and assists them in developing plans for improving performance.
Administers standardized tests in accordance with directions provided, including proctoring and secure handling of materials.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of curriculum content.
Communicates high learning expectations for all students.
Uses appropriate techniques and strategies to enhance the application of critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities of students.
Uses appropriate material, technology and resources to help meet learning needs of all students.
Assists students in assessing, interpreting and evaluating information from multiple sources.
Provides appropriate instruction and modifications for students with special needs, including exceptional education students and students who have limited proficiency in English.
Provides instruction on safety procedures and proper handling of materials and equipment.
Fosters student responsibility, appropriate social behavior, integrity, valuing of cultural diversity, and respect for self and others by role modeling and learning activities.
Communicates effectively, orally and in writing, with other professionals, students, parents and community.
Collaborates with students, parents, school staff and other appropriate persons to assist in meeting student needs.
Provides accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic and behavioral performance of students.
Works collaboratively with other teachers in curriculum development, instructional planning, special activities and sharing ideas and resources.
Recognizes overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral, or reporting actions.
Engages in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills.
Assists others in acquiring knowledge and understanding of particular area of responsibility.
Keeps abreast of developments in instructional methodology, learning theory, curriculum trends and content.
Conducts a personal assessment periodically to determine professional development needs with reference to specific instructional assignment.
Develops and implements a Professional Development Plan annually in accordance with state and system requirements.
Acts in a professional and ethical manner and adhere to professional standards at all times.
Serves on committees, task forces, planning teams, and advisory groups to improve student achievement.
Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.
Demonstrates attention to punctuality, attendance, records and reports; reports absences, takes leave, and prepares for substitutes according to Board policies and school procedures.
Maintains confidentiality of student and other professional information.
Exercises appropriate professional judgment.
Supports school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, events, ceremonies, services and programs.
Ensures that student growth/achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area and/or student program classification.
Models and maintains high ethical standards.
Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
Keeps principal informed of potential problems or unusual events.
Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
Performs other job-related tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position as directed.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s salary schedule.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
