Job Title: ESL Teacher Salary/Schedule: Department: Assigned School Days/Years: Hours FLSA: Exempt Supervises: None Reports To: Principal JOB GOAL: Accelerates the learning of English and the academic content of math, language arts, science, and social studies in order to meet passing classroom expectations, passing ACCESS scores and graduation requirements and provide cross-cultural information about the American school system and being a student in an American school for LEP (limited English proficient) students.
Serves as a liaison between the LEP student and all his/her classroom teachers and their families and the school.
Implements all ESL procedures in order to be in compliance with legal responsibilities.
Monitors and provides support for the following programs: English Second language, gifted, reading, mathematics, and extended day.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold a Master's Degree in education Minimum 5 years teaching experience.
Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
2002-457.
Knowledge of second language acquisition, research, program models, techniques for teaching English, reading, and content to second language learners, appropriate assessments for program placement and monitoring student achievement, and in implementing a formal ESL program.
Excellent interpersonal skills in order to: collaborate with all staff in a school and provide ongoing staff development and leadership as a specialist of the second language issues in a school.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: To assess all LEP students K-12 for ESL Program eligibility (WIDA Access Placement Test (WAPT) and assess all EL students with WIDA access for ELLs; To implement all the procedures of the ESL Program as prescribed in all manuals and written communication such as notices and memos by the ESL supervisor in order to be in compliance with the law and school division policies; To maintain appropriate and required documentation on every LEP student such as for the ESL Program Student Folder; To make recommendations to general education staff about the types of accommodations, adaptations, special resources, courses, classes, and classroom adjustments that are appropriate for each EL.
To make recommendations about the appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments whether within the school division or state by convening a LEP Review Committee and communicating those recommendations to parents and staff.
To serve as the second language specialist to an entire school district by maintaining a high knowledge base of the latest research, laws, most effective practices, and issues in the field.
To serve as a liaison between the EL, his/her family, and the school, especially with respect to cultural and language differences, and providing cross-cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships.
To monitor EL's progress in all aspects of his/her academic schedule and their participation in all school activities and programs and promote and advocate for their participation as appropriate.
To provide ongoing staff development as is necessary and/or requested on the second language acquisition and acculturation processes, sheltered instruction, the latest research, and most effective practices in teaching English language learners.

To participate in intra-school staff development opportunities that enhance the knowledge of the mainstream curriculum and issues in order to know how those relate to ELL and how to adapt or incorporate them into instruction.
To participate in all meetings within a school where representation of EL is needed and appropriate such as school councils, grade level, and others.
To participate in school division-level staff development meetings and workshops both specific to ELL and generic in order to be connected to and knowledgeable of the most current trends, practices, and procedures.
To maintain ongoing communication with parents and the families of EL students in a meaningful way that may require the use of interpreters and translations.
To maintain ongoing communication with all general education teachers of the EL students and maintain a positive, nurturing, collaborative, and consultative-type relationship.
To monitor and provide support for the following programs: English Second language, gifted, reading, mathematics, and extended day.
To spend sufficient amount of time in classrooms assisting.
To provide ESL instruction to classes, small groups, and individual students.
Perform any additional job duties and responsibilities which are considered necessary by the Superintendent.
EVALUATION: Evaluation is conducted by the principal.
