Position Title Staff Accountant
Job Summary
Tuskegee University seeks a skilled staff accountant with payroll experience.
In this role, the ideal candidate will play an important part in our financial operations ensuring accuracy in accounting and compliance with the law.
In keeping with the President’s commitment to Tuskegee University becoming an “Outcomes-Oriented University” the ideal Staff Accountant will be able to assist in the daily operations of the Accounting Department in alignment with the Offices of the Associate Vice President/Controller and Chief Financial Officer/Vice President of Fiscal Affairs of the University.
This position reports to the Accounting Manager and indirectly reports to the Payroll Manager.
Essential Job Duties
Reconcile assigned bank accounts on a monthly basis with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP)
Prepare and post journal entries to assigned asset, liability, capital, and expense accounts by compiling and analyzing account information.
Investigate issues and prepare adjusting journal entries as appropriate.
Summarize current financial status by collecting information, preparing financial statements and other reports.
Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents and reconciling assigned accounts back to subledger activity.
Assist in preparation of financial statements as assigned and produce reports according to reporting schedule
Support internal and external audits to ensure compliance.
Provide assistance, gather necessary account information and documents to support performing annual year end audit.
Assist and serve as backup for all aspects of payroll.
Account for transactions related to accounts payable and prepare supporting schedules
Maintain a copy of the grant invoices initiated and input them in the software package to generate and aged receivable for grants
Assist and serve as backup for all aspects of payroll.
Communicate with Manager and/or Associate Vice President for Business Affairs/Controller, CFO on work status and client issues that arise
Follow all University Health and Safety programs and actively participate in training to gain knowledge and understanding
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned to support the Controller, Fiscal Affairs, and Human Resources Departments.

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (required)
A minimum of two years’ experience as an accountant (required)
College/University accounting experience (preferred)

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written
Ability to exercise analytical skills
Experience with computerized office tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Ellucian experience (preferred)
