Position Information Position Title Assistant Director of the Comparative Medicine Resource Center Job Summary Supervision and training of laboratory animal caretakers and technicians and keeping records of animals and CMRC inventory.
Essential Job Duties Daily observe the animals and have some knowledge of animal behavior.
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the in-vivo Rodent-Lagomorph facility at CMRC Train and mentor faculty, staff, visiting scientist, postdoctoral fellows, veterinary and graduate students, work study students, and summer program students in occupational health and safety and general orientation to the animal facility to comply with the human treatment of research animals and the requirements of regulatory agents (mainly USDA and the office of OLAW) Liaise with the University’s attending veterinarian, director of CMRC, Department Head of Pathobiology, and chairperson of the Tuskegee University Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to ensure sound research with laboratory animals and ultimately gain accreditation in the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) for Tuskegee University Animal Care and Use Program for research.
Liaise with vendors and investigators to procure animals and research equipment and resources required for the upkeep of the facility.
Develop and/or review management forms, protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs); and prepare per Diem costs for investigators housing their research animals in the CMRC animal facility.
Liaise with Tuskegee University Facilities & Maintenance Department to provide functional research Animal Facility Participate in classroom instruction with other faculty teaching of the Laboratory Animal Management course in Animal Science and the Laboratory Animal Medicine course in the veterinary curriculum.
Attend graduate seminars and other required university faculty activities.
Liaise with AALAS national body and Midsouth AALAS to register the Tuskegee University as institutional member and participate in these organizations’ activities.
Serve a member of the Board of Directors for the Midsouth AALAS representing Tuskegee University.
Serve as a non-voting member of the IACUC, and member of Tuskegee University emergency and disaster committee as well as the Health and Safety committee of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Ensure that all investigators and research assistants/graduate students comply with proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities: Must be willing to work and supervise during weekends and holidays o Must be able to perform other responsibilities without or minimal supervision.
Be able to work in cooperation with all employees of Comparative Medicine Resource Center (CMRC) or other areas in the College of Veterinary Medicine and University.
Work in cooperation with all University Faculty and Staff, students or vendors that work directly with and/or in the CMRC facility.
Preferred Qualifications At least a university graduate, preferably with a master’s degree or PhD, plus completion of training in approved program for laboratory animal facility supervision and experience in working with animals.
Have at least three or more years of working experience with progressively increasing leadership responsibilities in a laboratory animal facility in an institution, industry, or government.
(Desirable but not required) Must have an American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technology (ALATg) or higher; and Good Laboratory Practice.

Skills and Attributes Basic knowledge of the husbandry of rodents (mice, rat, hamster, guinea pigs, etc.
), rabbits, dogs, goats, horses, birds, cattle, and/or other laboratory animals including immune-comprised research animals.
