Position Title Director/Curator of the Legacy Museum
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Library Services and working closely with the Provost and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs and the president and other administrators, ensure the alignment of the museum’s strategic objectives with those of Tuskegee University
Essential Job Duties
Work collaboratively with the Alliance of HBCU Museums and Galleries, Inc.
and the five other museums at the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site and Landmarks
Envision and implement short-term and long-range strategic plans for the museum’s institutional stability and growth.
Provide innovative museum and curatorial leadership regarding the care, conservation, development of the collections, and display of museum-originated shows and exhibitions that originate elsewhere.
Develop exhibitions, design exhibition materials, and manage the exhibition calendar
Arrange for the loan of materials for exhibit from other institutions
Prepare content and oversees the preparation of exhibit catalogues, news releases, or public announcements of new exhibit catalogues.
Manage the Legacy Museum Budget
Develop donor relations
Create and maintain curatorial records
Apply for and manage grants
Set technical policies for the museum’s operation in accord with standards and best practices of the American Alliance of Museums.
Build and strategically leverage current and new partnerships with other museums, academic institutions, community groups, and stakeholders.
Develop and foster synergies and collaborative working relationships with the faculty Integrate the museum into the educational and cultural life of the university through alignment with the university’s strategic plan and the interdisciplinary studies, goals, and objectives.
Foster community relations
Supervise work-study students, interns, fellows, and researchers
Perform all other related duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree from an accredited university in art, art history, museum administration, museum studies, or related field.
PhD preferred
3+ years of managerial experience, including supervising staff

Skills and Attributes
Expertise in writing grants or willingness to support awarded grants for the museum’s
success.
Proof of expertise in producing publications and exhibitions based on museum’s permanent collection
Experience working with and caring for visual arts collections, museums, or archival collections
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of best practices in conservation, historic preservation, and proven experience with other important HBCU museums and galleries
Knowledge of and connections to networks in the world of art and culture and their key participants
