Job Description Summary
AUTeach is a streamlined teacher preparation program at Auburn University for science majors.
The goals of the AUTeach Program are to attract and retain more students into teaching careers, and to graduate outstanding science teachers who are masters of their discipline, who know how to use technology to enhance learning, and who can understand and involve students in project-based inquiry.
AUTeach invites applications for a 10-month non-tenure track, Clinical Faculty position beginning August 2024.
The position is a one-year appointment subject to annual review based on performance, need for services, and available funding.
AUTeach seeks an enthusiastic candidate who is committed to teaching excellence, actively engaging with undergraduates, and able to teach undergraduate courses in the AUTeach program.
Master Teachers are the primary point of contact for undergraduate students in the AUTeach program.
Master teachers manage field experiences and teach field-based courses.
They observe and provide written and oral feedback to evaluate and help students improve their skills throughout the program.
They maintain strong working relationships with our partner school districts.
Master teachers work with local school district teachers and administrators to ensure appropriate field placements and productive teaching experiences for AUTeach students.
Master teachers maintain an “open door” policy, making themselves available to students on demand (within reason).
Master teachers are active in program recruitment, help manage student internships, and participate in a variety of other student support activities, including tracking students and identifying and following up with any students in danger of not completing the program.
Master teachers are knowledgeable about what new teachers encounter and provide ongoing and just in time career support for AUTeach graduates, particularly during their first two years of induction into the profession.
The position will require travel locally and may require periodic travel to UT Austin (one trip per year).
Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Minimum Qualifications · Bachelor’s degree in science or science education with a Master’s in science or science education, or in educational administration at the time of employment.
· Teaching certificate in the appropriate content area with at least three years of teaching experience at the time of employment.
- The ability to work effectively with diverse groups of youth in grades 6-12.
- The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
Desired Qualifications We desire candidates whose experience includes: Recognized performance in teaching science.
Demonstrated ability to apply STEM education research-based practices in the classroom, Evidence of strong advocacy for best teaching practices.
Experience with underrepresented groups in STEM or education fields Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and promoting a diverse and inclusive classroom environment Exemplary educational leadership such as a STEM coordinator, instructional specialist, or principal.
Demonstrated ability to work with school district partners on professional development Experience working with student teachers Knowledge of local school systems Extensive experience utilizing instructional technology to enhance science teaching Special Instructions to Applicants Persons hired will be appointed as clinical faculty members in the AUTeach program.
An appointment to this position will primarily involve participation in teaching and/or supervising undergraduate students in courses and experiences related to field-based teacher development.
Primary responsibilities include teaching field-based courses students take in their pursuit of certification, identifying qualified local public school teachers who can serve as mentor teachers, working with local area public school teachers who act as mentors for the students, working with the College’s Field Placement Office to coordinate field placements and student teaching sites for students, and conducting field observations of the students.
Additional duties will include student mentoring and other programmatically related tasks.
Period of Appointment: This non-tenure-track faculty appointment consists of a 9-month instructional and a 1-month summer administrative appointment, for a total of 10 months.
Additional instructional-related duties will be assigned to provide persons appointed in this title with the appropriate workload.
