Job Summary
The Auburn University Office of Information Technology (OIT) and our Infrastructure Virtualization and Storage (IVS) team, are seeking candidates to fill a Linux Systems Engineer position.
This position will assess technology trends and issues and define technical solutions to meet OIT’s needs.
Additionally, this position will help ensure stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support the IVS group’s functions.
Working onsite is a requirement of the job.
May work up to 3 days hybrid remote in local area with supervisor’s approval.

Essential Functions Installing and configuring new servers (virtual and physical); adding detailed working notes to related tickets in the Service Now platform; maintaining internal wiki pages.
Performing preventive maintenance; diagnosing, repairing, or replacing defective or malfunctioning equipment or working with hardware vendors to do the same.
Preparing and maintaining documentation for performed tasks, procedures, and all server changes.
Staying in compliance with IT related University policies (i.
e.
: cyber security).
Regular patching and monitoring of systems availability, backups and restores.
Handling DNS, Firewall, IP Administration, and SSL/TLS certificates.
Assisting with support of the Oracle Database and ERP System Groups as it relates to proprietary software on Linux systems.
Assisting with support of Enterprise Backup Systems.
Following all protocols regarding handling sensitive and confidential information (e.
g.
, PII).
May perform other general and/or related duties as assigned.
After-hours and on-call service should be expected.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications This position is advertised at two levels: Associate Systems Engineer (MA45): High school diploma and 8 years of relevant experience OR Associate’s degree and 4 years of experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 0 years of experience.
Typical starting salaries for this level is between $54,300 to $63,500 Systems Engineer (MA46): High school diploma and 11 years of relevant experience OR Associate’s degree and 7 years of experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience.
Typical starting salaries for this level is between $68,200 to $81,100 Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications Minimum Skills and Abilities Effective written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff.
Must be committed to the delivery of quality service and be self-motivated, able to work both independently under minimal supervision and as a team member, and comfortable learning and working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Proven ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage multiple detail-oriented projects simultaneously.

Minimum Technology Skills Experience or basic knowledge of administering Linux, Solaris, or other Unix servers, including shell scripting, patching, managing local firewalls, using logs for troubleshooting, and keeping the OS running.
Experience or basic knowledge of using virtual environments for deployment purposes (e.
g.
, VMware VSphere, Oracle VirtualBox, Microsoft Hyper-V).
Basic understanding of Windows Server operating systems.
Experience or basic knowledge of Active Directory and LDAP to manage users, groups, group policies and preferences.
Basic understanding of remote storage protocols (e.
g.
, iSCSI, NFS, SMB, etc.
).
Experience or basic knowledge of installing and configuring basic computer hardware and peripherals.
Minimum License and Certifications Desired Qualifications Desired Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Management Information Systems or related field.
In-depth experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or similar Linux Distribution.
Basic understanding of containerization and RHEL Atomic.
Experience with Samba configuration and support.
Experience with TSM Spectrum Protect Backup Software or other similar enterprise backup system.
Experience using a scripting language to perform administrative tasks: (perl, python, bash).
Basic knowledge with log management and discovery frameworks such as ELK stack (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana), Splunk, Wazuh or similar.
Experience or basic understanding of managing systems configured with SAN storage devices (e.
g.
, setup, diagnosis, and safe replacement of failed parts).
Experience with one or more automation frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef or similar.
Experience with using or administering a relational database system such as MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle or IBM DB2.
Experience with the following protocols/ports: DNS, HTTP, iSCSI, LDAP, MADP, NTP, RDP, SFTP, SMB, SNMP, SMTP, SSH, SSL, TELNET.
Experience with VMware.
