Position Information Position Title Forester Job Summary The Forester position requires primarily professional knowledge and competency in forestry science.
The work involves the supervision of and/or participation in the development, production, conservation, and utilization of the natural resources of forest and associated lands; management of forest resources (including timber, water, soil, recreation, plant and wildlife habitat) in relationship with other resources to meet present and future needs; protection of resources against fire, insects disease, weeds, floods, erosion, and other depredations; protection of threatened and endangered species; evaluation of forest properties and resources thereon or potentials; discovery and interpretation of principles and facts upon which the management of forest lands rest; integration of socio-economic variables in the development of forestry management practices; and development of new/improved methods, practices, techniques, and instruments necessary to perform such work.
This position supports the technical activities of the Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Program in the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences.
Professional Forester work assignments encompass problems of average difficulty and complexity.
Work is characterized by the analysis and evaluation of conditions, characteristics, values, and relationships of forest resources.
As an individual or as a team leader, plan and carry out systematic forest resource surveys and inventories; develop plans for recreation sites; evaluate forest fire hazards; cruise tracts of timber prior to release for sale; assemble appraisal data; survey boundaries; check on trespass on University lands; lay out trails and timber roads; conduct administrative studies; may direct the work of lower level professional and non-professional forestry workers, such as students; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Job Duties Duties will include coordination, planning, tracking, and technical assistance for research and actions such as riparian forest buffer restoration, longleaf pine restoration, tree planting, sustainable forest management, forest conservation, forest health, source water protection, forest ecosystem services, and assessing forest harvesting BMPs.
The position is designed to directly support the implementation and tracking of forestry practices that contribute to the long-term sustainable use of Tuskegee University’s private land holdings.

, Introduction to Forestry, Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration with an applied methods approach.
Support the Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Program with partner collaborations, internship placement, graduate research, student advisement, and graduate studies placement.
Requires travel to partner institutions.
Develops and implement surveys on Tuskegee University’s private forest lands to evaluate forest health.
Processes and analyzes data for state-level forest health projects.
Prepare contracts for timber sale and monitor sales through completion to ensure compliance.
Oversee consultants and contractors related to timber management and timber sales.
Conducts research and a variety of monitoring projects to create data reports and presentations to provide technical support related to forest health issues, timber products and sustainable forest management for resource professionals and the public.
Prepares and conducts training sessions for low resource landowners in the field of forest health monitoring, including but not limited to insect and disease identification, mensuration techniques, soil sampling, and aerial survey procedures.
Provides consulting services to other and private woodland owners with the service area of Carver Experimental Station.
Assistants in the research design and implementation of research projects at Russell Plantation and Camp Atkins.
Works regularly with outside agencies such as the USDA Forest Service, APHIS, NRCS & FSA, Alabama Forestry Commission, and others to coordinate regional forest health monitoring activities.
Inspects properties, monitors pest populations, and maintains relations with landowners, pellet, pulp, and sawmills markets to prevent infestation or spread of exotic forest pests.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training) Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters AND a Master of Science in or related to forestry/forest management.
Master’s degree must be completed within seven (7) months of hire.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or University with a major study in forestry or a closely related field which must have included fifteen semester hours with a curriculum sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following three subject areas: Management of Renewable Resources: study of the science of managing renewable resources to attain desired results.
Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations and planning, forest product management, agroforestry, arboriculture, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, environmental policy, horticulture, recreational land management, watershed management, hydrology, and wildlife or range habitat management.
Forest Ecology/Forest Biology: study of the interrelated patterns, processes, classification, distribution, characteristics, identification of forest vegetation and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment.
Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, restoration ecology, plant ecology, silvics, botany, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, soils, entomology, and forest or plant pathology.
Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory: study of sampling, inventory, measurement, Geographic Information Systems, geography, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources.
Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, forest or environmental economics, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.
FORESTRY EXPERIENCE: Two or more years of progressively responsible professional forestry work experience involving one or a combination of any of the following: Management of forest resources, e.

, forest products, prescribed burning water, botanical, wildlife, public recreation, soils, urban forestry, wildlands.
Protection of forest resources against fire, insects, diseases, invasive species, floods, erosion(s) and other depredations.
Development, production, conservation, restoration, monitoring, inventory, and utilization of forest resources, including timber evaluation and prescribed fire.
Applied research and analysis directly applicable to the development, protection, production, and management of forest resources; and/or Resource planning for the development, protection, production, and management of forest resources Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
